The Halifax Convention Centre is going to quickly become an iconic building in the Halifax landscape. But once visitors step inside, what will it be like? Barry and Paula, the designer/architects leading the interior design project, wanted to design a space that truly oozed Nova Scotian-ness. Hailing from Toronto, they took their Nova Scotian immersion very seriously. In addition to participating in extensive public consultation events, the two of them simply walked Halifax for a solid week. They explored Pier 21 and pondered Halifax’s multicultural heritage. They walked the waterfront and shorelines observing the wood, water, rust and stone. They stood at the Halifax Explosion memorial and reflected on the impact of the disaster.
Together, they translated their observations into design features that will not only create a beautiful, memorable and high-quality destination for events and conferences; they also designed a space that infuses visitors with a true sense of what it means to be in the Maritimes.
